Sound Of Hope initiative
Cochlear™ Implant Programme at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Pretoria, In Clinical Partnership with Prof. Mashudu Tshifularo from the University of Pretoria
The Sound of Hope Initiative is a Section 18A-registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) dedicated to funding the Cochlear™ Implants Programme for qualifying underprivileged patients at Steve Biko Academic Hospital - in partnership with Professor Mashudu Tshifularo, the surgeon who performed the world’s first 3D middle ear transplant.
World-First surgical pioneer
Professor Mashudu Tshifularo is a globally celebrated South African surgeon who made medical history in 2019 by performing the world’s first successful middle ear transplant using 3D-printed titanium prostheses. This breakthrough - now known as the “Tshifularo Procedure” offers hope to millions suffering from conductive hearing loss, effectively bypassing traditional hearing aids and cochlear implants in specific cases of middle ear damage.
A mission beyond the operating theatre
While his surgical innovations have drawn international acclaim,
Professor Tshifularo’s greatest passion remains accessibility. Every day in his public sector practice at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, he witnesses heartbreaking scenarios: children born deaf who could learn to hear, adults who lost their hearing due to illness or injury, and industrious workers whose livelihood is shattered by hearing loss. The common, tragic thread? Lack of funds.
Cochlear implants - life-changing medical devices that directly stimulate the auditory nerve - cost between R250,000 and R500,000 per patient. For the underprivileged communities that Professor Tshifularo serves, this is an insurmountable barrier. Government health systems, while excellent, face long queues and limited quotas for these high-cost implants.
A man of deep empathy & action
Born and raised in Moletjie village outside Polokwane, Professor Tshifularo understands the reality of limited resources. He often says, “No one should be denied the gift of sound because of their bank balance.”
He dedicates his Saturdays and after-hours time to reviewing patients who have been turned away elsewhere. He personally navigates the red tape to find sponsors for a few lucky individuals each year - but for every person he helps, dozens remain on a silent, hopeless waiting list.
Why has he authorised this campaign
Professor Tshifularo is not a fundraiser by nature; he is a surgeon. However, the scale of the need has moved him to action. He has formally authorized this campaign because he believes that ordinary people, companies, and foundations, when united by compassion, can achieve what government and hospitals alone cannot.
His role in this campaign is to provide:
Medical oversight: Ensuring every implant is performed by his expert team.
Patient selection: Identifying the most urgent and suitable candidates.
Surgical excellence: Performing or supervising the implant surgeries at no added profit.

His message to potential donors
“Hearing is not a luxury. It is how a child learns to speak, how a mother hears ‘I love you,’ and how an adult earns a living. I have the surgical skill and the team. All we lack is the funding to reach the many who wait in silence. Please, partner with us. Let us give the gift of sound - together.” ~ Prof. Mashudu Tshifularo
